The Grind

S. O. A. P.

Here’s Your 90 second AM Devotional!

S-cripture:

Matthew 15:8 These people honor me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me.

O-bservation:

Jesus quoted the words of Isaiah the Prophet (Is. 29:13) when He spoke of the Pharisees. He said, "These law keepers only give Me lip service, but their hearts are not near where I am."

A-pplication:

Every good Jewish young man was to have memorized the 5 books of the Torah by the age of 13. Jesus was no exception. But His ability to recall Old Testament prophecies to be applied to the era in which He lived was unparalleled. The Pharisees could spit out the Old Testament with the best law-abiding citizens on the planet, however their application of the Prophecies, Laws, and Teachings of that material was lousy. There was "No Bend" in any of it whatsoever. There were NO Exceptions, Period. Here's the problem, when Grace is not present in your faith, keeping the law is better known as ... "The Grind." There's no "relationship with God factor." And, there's no "heart motivation to please the Lord factor." Instead it's really only "Lip Service," where Laws and To Do Lists are promoted over Love, the Golden Rule, and a Passion for the Lord. In other words ... the individual is now going through ... "The Grind," while that same person's HEART is 1,000,000 miles away from Jesus. Please pray it never happens to you. "The Grind," that is.

P-rayer:

Dear Jesus, Early this AM, I am aware of Your Love and Care for me. I know of Your sacrifice on my behalf. I don't want this to be a "One Way" relationship. I threw "The Grind" out a long time ago. My HEART is with You! Amen

They Killed Him Anyway

S. O. A. P.

Here’s Your 90 second AM Devotional!

S-cripture:

Matthew 22:46 No one could say a word in reply, and from that day on no one dared to ask him any more questions.

O-bservation:

The Pharisees were forever trying to trap Jesus with questions that would cause Him to flounder in His responses, thereby giving them a leg up on the Lord. Nothing they tried worked. Jesus always had a better answer to their questions. In this case, Jesus asked THEM a question. He actually trapped them by answering His own question, and from that time on they never asked Him another question.

A-pplication:

Never in history to that point in time, or since, has there ever been a Rabbi who was rejected for being right every time like the Rabbi known as Jesus. The truth is, no matter how many times Jesus was right and no matter how many times He silenced His critics, “They Killed Him Anyway.” The challenge is Never about being RIGHT, the challenge is and always has been STANDING for what is RIGHT. Jesus died for His stance, not His intelligence. No matter how smart you may be, you can always take a stand for what you believe.

P-rayer:

Dear Jesus, This AM, I want to thank You for taking Your Stand. With Your help, I will too! Amen

How’s The Weather There?

S. O. A. P.

Here’s Your 90 second AM Devotional!

S-cripture:

Matthew 16:3b You know how to interpret the appearance of the sky, but you cannot interpret the signs of the times.

O-bservation:

Earlier in the text, Jesus told the Pharisees and Sadducees that they could tell what the weather would be like that day based upon what they observed in the sky through forecasting the signs. However, He said, “You can’t interpret the signs of the times.”

A-pplication:

Obviously Jesus was speaking of spiritual matters when He spoke of the “Signs of the Times.” It appears as though we haven’t advanced much from the Pharisees position over 2,000 years ago. There are Biblical prophecies that are being fulfilled almost as I write, yet people continue to be concerned about such mundane things as the weather. Can the quest for small stuff ever become secondary? That’s the challenge of our day. The signs of the times are all around us. St. Paul called these signs of the times, “Terrible Times” (2 Tim. 3:1). One can certainly tell we’ve arrived there, because the big question all day will be, “How’s The Weather There?”

P-rayer:

Dear Jesus, I’ve put the talk of weather behind me in order to discern the “Signs of the Times.” Help me help others. Amen

Why Not?

S. O. A. P.

Here’s Your 90 second AM Devotional!

S-cripture:

Matthew 9:11 When the Pharisees saw this, they asked his disciples, “Why does your teacher eat with tax collectors and sinners?”

O-bservation:

When Jesus called Matthew, the writer of this book, to “Follow Him,” Matthew took Jesus to his house and had a party. The Pharisees were upset and asked Jesus’ disciples how in the world Jesus could hang out with sinners.

A-pplication:

Jesus overheard the question and said to the religious, law-abiding Pharisees, “It’s sick people who need a doctor.” Jesus told them He hadn’t come to call righteous people, but sinners. How is it that even today, if we’re not careful, we the CHURCH can become somewhat of a private club. Think about it, we have our own membership apparatus, club songs, rules, and so on. If you look at the the New Testament requirement for salvation, it is simply BELIEVE IN JESUS. That’s been my personal message to SINNERS my whole life. “Believe in Jesus and keep coming on this journey with us! Jesus will lead you.” If anyone ever asks me why I hang with sinners, I simply say “Why Not?” Someone hung with me. Thank God they did!

P-rayer:

Dear Jesus, I’m heading out this AM to do what You taught me. Hang with sinners! Since that’s what I am, saved by grace, I’ll feel right at home. Amen

RELIGION

S. O. A. P.

Here’s Your 90 second AM Devotional!

S-cripture:

Mark 7:8 You have let go of the commands of God and are holding on to human traditions.

O-bservation:

Once again the Pharisees had pulled Jesus into one of their debates. Their debates always concerned themselves with “RELIGION.” Jesus said, “You have left the commands of God and are clinging to your religious traditions.”

A-pplication:

Following the Lord’s commands pleases God, while following the traditions of humanity pleases humanity. “RELIGION” has always had its roots in living up to some man-made tradition or rule that does not protect people, but instead diminishes them. God’s commands are for our protection and best good. “RELIGION” is a laborious quest for the unreachable. Humans keep adding stuff. Look at the US Congress. We have no clue how many, or what, the laws are that they keep adding and amending. That’s a good analogy for human-made “RELIGION.” You’re never sure what the goal is, and you’re never sure if you’re anywhere near reaching it. Personally, I choose Jesus over “RELIGION.” Here’s Jesus' law ... “Love the Lord with all your heart, soul, mind, and strength, and love your neighbor like you love and respect yourself.” For me that spells “JESUS” over “RELIGION.”

P-rayer:

Dear Jesus, Help me to love You with all my heart, soul, mind, and strength today and everyday! Amen
