SOAP STANDS FOR:

S – Scripture
O – Observation
A – Application
P – Prayer

When you study God’s Word using the SOAP method, you are choosing one verse out of that day’s reading and focusing on it in several ways. The SOAP method is a 4-step Bible study process that allows you to dive deep into God’s word and actively apply it to your life. Here are the four steps you will take.

S – Scripture

Write down the Bible passage you’ll be studying and spend time really thinking about the verse itself and what is happening in that verse.

O – Observation

Really look at the text and write down your observations. You might write about:

  • What jumps out to you in the passage?
  • Who is it written by? Who is it written to?
  • What’s one thing you didn’t notice before?
  • What seems interesting or unusual?
  • What comes before and after the text?

A – Application

In the applications step, you will apply God’s Word to your life in a practical way. This is where you personalize your study of Scripture. As you read over the text, how does it apply to you? Is there a specific action you need to take or a confession you need to make?

P – Prayer

Finally, take time to write out a prayer in response to God’s Word. Thank God for the insights He’s given you and ask Him for His continued influence in your life.
