Here’s your 90 second AM devotional!
S-cripture:
Luke 5:4
When he had finished speaking, he said to Simon, “Put out into deep water, and let down the nets for a catch.”
O-bservation:
Earlier Jesus asked Simon to use his boat to preach from. A large crowd had followed Jesus and so Simon Peter pushed away from shore so Jesus could use his boat as a stage. Water is a good conductor of sound, so it was a perfect fit for Jesus. When Jesus finished preaching, He said to Peter, “Let’s go out to ‘Deep Water’ for a catch of fish.” After a brief argument, Peter finally relented and went deep. The haul of fish was amazing.
A-pplication:
There is a powerful principle in this story of “Risking Deep.” The big rewards are seldom found in safe places. Rarely is gold ever found in one’s back yard. Big fish, and lots of them, rarely swim with the minnows. “Big Reward” in God’s Kingdom is always a result of “Big Faith.” For Jesus this was a simple payback. “Peter you helped me preach more effectively, now I will help you fish more effectively.” But Peter didn’t know that Jesus had made the fish and knew where the fish were. He just knew that the preacher wanted to go fishing and he hadn’t slept all night. BUT … what a Payoff! “Risking Deep” is always the formula for huge Faith Dividends!
P-rayer:
Dear Jesus,
I know after all these years of serving You that the temptation is always to stay in safe waters. But the “Deep Waters,” and the risk to go there, keeps calling me to “Risk Deep.” Amen
