You Can Run But You Can’t Hide

Here’s Your 90 second AM Devotional!

Genesis 38:24

About three months later Judah was told, “Your daughter-in-law Tamar is guilty of prostitution, and as a result she is now pregnant.” Judah said, “Bring her out and have her burned to death!”

This is the story of Judah, whose son Er married Tamar. He was wicked, and God caused him to die. He had not had children with Tamar, so it was customary for the next son in line to bear children with the late brother’s wife to keep a legacy for his older brother. That son’s name was Onan. Onan refused to do the will of his father and God. So God caused him to die as well. Judah said to Tamar, “Go live with your father’s family, when my youngest son Shelah is old enough, I will give you him.” But he never did. Judah’s wife died, and Judah went to the city where his sheep were to be sheered. While there, he met a prostitute and asked her to sleep with him. She said, “I’ll need a young goat in payment, and I’ll need your seal, your cord, and your staff as surety until I receive the goat.” Judah agreed and slept with the woman, and she became pregnant. The woman he slept with was Tamar, who had heard he was having his sheep sheared in a certain place. Judah had not been honest with Tamar and had held his third son Shelah back from her. When he found out she was pregnant, he told his servants to go and have her burned to death for her sin. When they went to get her, she said, “I am pregnant by the man who owns this staff and this cord and this seal.” When Judah heard, he said, “She’s more righteous than me!” Tamar had twins, and the twin named Perez became a forefather of Jesus Christ. That, of course, made his mother Tamar a foremother of Jesus as well.

When you think of the actions of this man, Judah, one can only say, “You Can Run, But You Can’t Hide!”

Dear Jesus,

I’m grateful this AM as I read this CRAZY story of the head of one of the 12 tribes of Israel, Judah, that You always do the right thing. No matter how much of a mess we make of things, You can always be trusted to do the right thing for all involved! Amen
