S-cripture:

Leviticus 12:8b

In this way the priest will make atonement for her, and she will be clean.

O-bservation:

In the Old Testament, the priest was much more than a man of God who went through the daily tasks or ministry in the temple. Their duties included medical attention to the Israelites. They prescribed and dispensed different potions or prescriptions to the people who came to them for direction. They also determined when a person was deemed well. In this case, the law was given for how a woman was found CLEAN after childbirth by the priest. If the woman had a son, it took 33 days for her to be clean. If the woman had a girl, the process doubled to 66 days before she was pronounced clean by the priest.

A-pplication:

The Old Testament priest was a man skilled in a limited way for all kinds of help for the people he served. He was a counselor, a friend, a helper, and a representative to God for the people. There were many things a priest could do in the Old Testament, but have you ever considered “What A Priest Can’t Do?” Jesus, our great high priest, offered Himself as the perfect sacrifice for humanity’s sins and was crucified on a cruel cross. He was laid in a borrowed tomb for three days and rose from the dead on the third day. The writer of Hebrews said, “But when this priest had offered for all time one sacrifice for sins, he sat down at the right hand of God” (Hebrews 10:12). And that’s “What A Priest Can’t Do!”

P-rayer:

Dear Jesus,

This AM, I am so grateful that you are my great high priest. Because of Your sacrifice on the cross, my sins have been atoned for, and I am forgiven. A little lamb no longer has to be sacrificed for my sins because YOU, the Lamb of God, have taken away my sins. Amen
