The Ministry Of Deacons

S. O. A. P.

Here’s Your 90 second AM Devotional!

Acts 6:3-4
Brothers and sisters, choose seven men from among you who are known to be full of the Spirit and wisdom. We will turn this responsibility over to them and will give our attention to prayer and the ministry of the word.

This was the beginning of the ministry of Deacons in the early church. It was such an important ministry that most evangelical churches still practice this ministry in some form today. The deacon was originally appointed by the Apostles to take care of the ongoing needs of the Saints in the church. They were to be God-fearing men, full of the Holy Spirit.

Actually, 1 Timothy 3:8-13 gives us the biblical qualifications of a New Testament Deacon. What amazes me about these wonderful leaders is their capacity and desire to serve. But what is even more interesting is that the first Christian martyr in the New Testament was a DEACON named Stephen. Stephen was a powerful preacher and defender of the faith as he served God’s people. One of the first evangelists in the New Testament was Philip, another original DEACON. We often relegate “The Ministry Of Deacons” to the business of the church and the service side alone, but the true New Testament deacon could do it all for Jesus. I’d love to be a deacon someday.

Dear Jesus,
I’m grateful for the leaders in the church I serve who have given their lives as DEACONS. They’ve blessed your people, but they’ve surely blessed me as well. Amen
