The Audacity of Human Power

S. O. A. P

Here’s your 90 second AM devotional!

S-cripture:

John 19:1

Then Pilate took Jesus and had him flogged.

O-bservation:

Pilate was the Roman Governor of Judea in AD 33. I dare say no one reading this knows the Roman Governor of Judea before or after Pilate. I don’t even know who the Governor of Montana is right now. Pilate’s only fame occurred because he released Jesus into the hands of an angry mob that crucified Him. BUT … before that Pilate (the little governor punk) had Jesus flogged!

A-pplication:

Let’s suppose you are not a Christian. If that is true I will bet you probably have no reason to hate the man Jesus. Your argument or unbelief may be tied to the fact that you know other Christians who maybe don’t follow the teachings of Jesus and operate in a hypocritical way. Still … doesn’t it trouble you that any man can have another man publicly flogged just because he can? I mean presumably Pilate had Jesus whipped because Jesus was a threat to a religion Pilate didn’t even believe in. I call that “Showing Off” or maybe even better … “The Audacity of Human Power.” Now here’s the deal, I AM A FOLLOWER OF JESUS! And the thought that some little peanut Roman Governor of Judea can have the “King of Kings,” Jesus Christ The Lord, publicly flogged makes my blood boil!! But that is not a response my Lord would approve of. So today I choose to forgive Pilate and any other little human who hurts people just because they can. In fact I don’t ever want to do something unjust just because I can.

P-rayer:

Dear Jesus,

Help me love when it’s hard. When I see injustice let me respond like You would respond. Help me forgive those who use their human power to hurt others just because they can. Amen
