Workin Or Just Talkin?

S. O. A. P.

Here’s Your 90 second AM Devotional!

S-cripture:

Proverbs 14:23 All hard work brings a profit. But mere talk leads only to poverty.

O-bservation:

The wise man Solomon, at the time of this writing, was building the Temple in Jerusalem for "Almighty God." Over 180,000 laborers were used for this massive seven-year undertaking. Solomon knew first hand what "Hard Work" could produce.

A-pplication:

I've often heard the line used ... "He TALKS a good game." This is a line used to describe a person who is good at promoting their ideas or desired business plan, but who can't produce on their promises. "Workin Or Just Talkin?" That's always been the question. I drive through the streets of my city during the workweek and often see lots of people on the streets. Many of them are just "Hanging Out," TALKIN. They've got visions and dreams and ideas. But every dream, vision, and idea has to have a place from which to launch. That place is called WORK! Work brings discipline, character, and an understanding of authority. All of these are essential for building a great life, family, business, or church. WORK! Every great "Work Place" has a series of designated "break times," during the workday. These times are set aside for "TALKIN." But then ... "Back To Work!" Just TALKIN brings poverty but WORKIN brings profit. It's your decision today.

P-rayer:

Dear Jesus, Thank You for the gift of WORK. I don't want to be a Good Talker, I really want to be a GREAT WORKER! Help Me! Amen

Some Things Must Be Dealt With Face To Face

S. O. A. P.

Here’s Your 90 second AM Devotional!

S-cripture:

3 John 1:14a I hope to see you soon, and we will talk face to face.

O-bservation:

John was speaking to his friend Gaius in this letter, and this man is one of five different men that are mentioned in the New Testament with the same name. Theologians say there is no reason to believe that Gaius mentioned here was any of the others. Most likely, he was a man of means who had blessed a church or the churches in some financial way, or had unusual influence in his region. At least many historians tend to agree on this identification. Whoever he was, he was a trusted friend of John the Beloved’s, and what John needed to say to him was so private John felt as though he had to see him face to face in order to deliver the message.

A-pplication:

“Some Things Must Be Dealt With Face To Face.” I believe this with all of my heart. Not just because others may somehow see a text or an email or hear a voice message that wasn’t intended for them, but also because, face to face meetings are not just private, they are better understood than any other means of communication. Voice inflections by a person are sometimes indicators of what is really being said. A look in one's eye, or possibly a frown, or even a thumbs up can’t always be realized on a cell call or a written statement. When you have something really important to say, try and say it face to face. Some of you reading this post should consider FaceTime if you don’t already have it. That’s better than getting on a plane. But at the time, all John could do was to travel distances by foot in order to deliver a private message. Why? Because, “Some Things Must Be Dealt With Face To Face.”

P-rayer:

Dear Jesus, Help me deliver important private issues that aren’t meant for the whole world, face to face. It’s not always easy for this to happen, but John sure encouraged us all to do it for all time. Please help me use better wisdom when communicating important information. Amen

They Wouldn’t Walk The Talk

S. O. A. P.

Here’s Your 90 second AM Devotional!

S-cripture:

Mark 7:6 He replied, “Isaiah was right when he prophesied about you hypocrites; as it is written: ‘These people honor me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me.’”

O-bservation:

The Pharisees took Jesus on once again when they asked Him about His disciples not washing their hands properly before they ate. This was Jewish law. Jesus replied that the people who were coming against Him in this way were the very ones Isaiah had prophesied about when he said, “These people honor me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me.” In other words, “They Wouldn’t Walk The Talk.”

A-pplication:

We are living in an age not unlike the times of Jesus. We are part of what is known as the “Cancel Culture.” If someone doesn’t like what you said or did, they will go on social media and speak about something that you may or may not have done and then tell their friends not to befriend you any longer. Usually, the person being canceled did or said something that was reported, and the report was inaccurate. That’s exactly what these Pharisees wanted to do. Instead, Jesus called them out and identified them as the ones Isaiah had prophesied about six hundred years earlier! They could talk the talk, but “They Wouldn’t Walk The Talk.” Jesus has always called you and me up higher. It’s time for all of us to practice what we preach.

P-rayer:

Dear Jesus, Help me, Jesus. I don’t want to preach something that I’m unwilling to live out. Only You can give me the strength to practice what I preach. Amen

Smart Folks Don’t Talk Much

S. O. A. P.

Here’s Your 90 second AM Devotional!

S-cripture:

Proverbs 17:27 The one who has knowledge uses words with restraint, and whoever has understanding is even-tempered.

O-bservation:

The wise King Solomon made it quite clear that the person in the room with knowledge holds back on using many words. They are even-tempered because they have an understanding of critical matters.

A-pplication:

Have you ever heard the line, “He constantly loses his mind in a crisis?” If you have, you know they aren’t saying that the person is mentally ill or needs medication, but rather the person seldom thinks a problem through before speaking. The very next verse in this chapter of Proverbs says that even a fool is thought to be wise if they keep silent. The opposite of the earlier illustration occurs when it is said of a certain person, “She certainly is level-headed.” Or here’s another one, “He keeps his head when the pressure is on.” Once again, both of these statements are made about people who are calm during a disturbance. Years ago, there was a movie called “Being There.” It was about a simple-minded gardener named Chance. He worked in an upscale neighborhood in Washington, D.C. His wealthy, high society employer died, and he was forced to leave the estate. He ran into another wealthy man in the neighborhood while walking to the bus stop with his suitcase, and the neighbor struck up a conversation with the gardener. His limited discussion concerning gardening caused the wealthy neighbor to regard him highly. Because of it, the poor gardener was welcomed into high society parties, while those who invited him there assumed he was brilliant. Why? Because he didn’t say much! If a fool can appear wise by limiting his words, is it any wonder why Solomon said, “Smart Folks Don’t Talk Much.”

P-rayer:

Dear Jesus, Help me keep my mouth shut today and glorify You in all I do. Amen

The LORD Wants To Talk To YOU!

S. O. A. P.

Here’s Your 90 second AM Devotional!

S-cripture:

Leviticus 1:1 The Lord called to Moses and spoke to him from the tent of meeting.

O-bservation:

After Moses led the Israelites out of Egypt’s bondage, whenever God wanted to communicate with him a Tent of Meeting was set up in the wilderness so Moses could speak with the Lord. Here, at the outset of the book of Leviticus, the Lord called Moses into that Tent in order to stipulate the specific rules of the newly formed priesthood and how they were to administrate the worship of God in the tabernacle.

A-pplication:

Through the centuries, humanity has searched for God. Adam and Eve would speak with Him in the cool of the evening. Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob had Him speak openly to them. Moses first heard Him in a burning bush, but in time from a Tent of Meeting. God has never run from humans, it’s always been the other way around. After we run long enough, we then return to searching for God. Some have moved into strange heathen practices, others literally remain quiet for years hoping to communicate with Him in silence, when all along Jesus is just a prayer away. He told the prophet Jeremiah, “Call unto me and I will answer thee” (Jer. 33:3). That’s pretty plain and simple. The truth is, “The LORD Wants To Talk To YOU!”

P-rayer:

Dear Jesus, I’m so full of thanks this AM, knowing that You want to talk with me. There are billions of people on this planet, but You want to talk to me. What’s really impressive is that all of us can have a separate conversation with You at the same time! How big and great You are! Amen
