Here’s your 90 second AM devotional!

S-cripture:

Genesis 35:2

So Jacob said to his household and to all who were with him, “Get rid of the foreign gods you have with you, and purify yourselves and change your clothes.”

O-bservation:

Shechem, a King’s son, had raped Jacob’s daughter Dinah in the previous chapter. Jacobs’s sons killed Shechem, his father, and all of the men of that city. They took all of their herds and wealth and women and children as a payback. When Jacob heard of this, he was upset and afraid. He told his family and all of his employees, cleanse yourselves spiritually. Get rid of the foreign gods you have amassed. In other words, “PURIFY!”

A-pplication:

This is an incredible story. It’s hard to relate to because most of us immediately say, “Well that certainly has never happened to me. I’m not even capable of such a thing.” But the truth is, as “Followers of Christ” we can sometimes forget Who we’re really following. And if we’re not careful, pretty soon it’s hard to tell us from the rest of the population. We certainly aren’t called to be better than everybody else, but through the “Power of Jesus” we are called to be better than what we are. Every once in a while, it’s good to check our inventory to see if we have accumulated any other gods. If so, it’s time to … “PURIFY.”

P-rayer:

Dear Jesus,

Today help me to search my personal closet for “stray gods.” I don’t want anything to come between You and me. I’m ready to … “PURIFY.” Amen
