Here’s your 90 second AM devotional!
S-cripture:
Hosea 3:2
So I bought her for fifteen shekels of silver and about a homer and a lethek of barley.
O-bservation:
As a sign of God’s love for His beloved, yet wayward nation of Israel, He used the marriage of His prophet Hosea to the prostitute named Gomer. YES, THAT’S CORRECT. God told the prophet to marry a prostitute to show in an analogous way just how wayward Israel was. After marrying Hosea, Gomer went back to chasing other lovers. In a broken state, Hosea went to where she was and bought her back as his wife.
A-pplication:
It is true that in today’s economy Hosea paid about $60 to buy his wife back. However, he was obviously a poor man, because of the way the verse is written. It appears that he emptied his savings account, went to his dresser drawer, cleaned it out of spare change, and then found something, anything of value to put together enough to buy her back! I really don’t know how else God could’ve screamed to Israel from heaven … “I’ll do anything for your love.” And of course in time God put together everything He had in heaven … His name was Jesus. And as Jesus hung on that cross over 2,000 years ago, you can almost hear Father God from heaven wailing … “I’ll Do Anything For Your Love.”
P-rayer:
Dear Jesus,
Today I really only have ONE thing to say … Thanks so much for buying me back! Amen
