When You Can’t Fight Anymore

S. O. A. P.

Here’s Your 90 second AM Devotional!

2 Samuel 21:17

But Abishai son of Zeruiah came to David’s rescue; he struck the Philistine down and killed him. Then David’s men swore to him, saying, “Never again will you go out with us to battle, so that the lamp of Israel will not be extinguished.”

This is the last recorded battle that King David ever fought in. He had been known as a warrior king, the likes of which the people of Israel had never seen before. But in this, his last battle, he became weary, and an enemy Philistine warrior endeavored to kill him. Abishai raised up instead and killed the enemy. When it was over, David’s men said, “You cannot go to battle with us again because we can’t afford for the light to go out in Israel.”

There is a key line that the men of Israel said to David upon his forced retirement from battle. “We can’t afford for the light to go out in Israel.” David was their light. The mere mention of his name would bring fear to other kings. Yes, the enemy all wanted to take him down, but none of them could. He was a fearless warrior. “When You Can’t Fight Anymore,” remember that your reputation proceeds you. Remember, as you age, that you have been a light and a hope for so many. Do so knowing that you’re still very much needed in the battle. Your name is an inspiration to others who look up to you as a believer. The spiritual battles you’ve fought and won will long be remembered.

Dear Jesus,

This AM, I feel that someone is reading this devotional who feels they can’t do what they used to do. The enemy has them feeling down because they don’t have the youthful vigor they once did. Please help my friend right now to know that they are an inspiration to many. Help them rise up today with a smile and a faith that defies the devil’s attack. Amen
