Move Slow On This

S. O. A. P.

Here’s Your 90 second AM Devotional!

S-cripture:

1 Timothy 5:22 Do not be hasty in the laying on of hands, and do not share in the sins of others. Keep yourself pure.

O-bservation:

This warning to young Timothy by the Apostle Paul, his mentor, had to do with ordaining people into the ministry. Paul told him that when this happens without a complete background check on this person’s true calling and personal relationship with Jesus, it could come back to hurt the church later. Included in this warning, Paul said, “Do not share in the sins of others.” By this, the Apostle meant don’t restore a fallen brother or sister to church fellowship too soon. Paul believed that if a man or woman was truly penitent, it would be obvious to others. If they weren’t, the minister wanting to restore them too quickly would himself fall into sin. It was Paul’s desire that the ministers remain pure.

A-pplication:

How many times have we heard of a young minister falling spiritually early in their ministry? For me I’ve heard the stories now through five decades of spiritual leadership. The weight of spiritual leadership is hard to measure because it’s immeasurable. It may mean one thing to one spiritual leader and something else to another spiritual leader. No two are alike, and the burdens that will bury some are a piece of cake for others to carry. Either way, the weight of Christian leadership is not given by the devil, but instead, it is given by God the Father. This calling by God to young people to preach the Word, makes proper ministry placement paramount as they move forward. Yet, as talented as some of them are, they all need refinement in God’s refiner’s fire. When they fail to receive this refinement and somehow move to the top of the heap of ministry selection, the word to all ministry buyers is, “Move Slow On This!” Don’t try and play God in hiring this person. In fact, you may let someone else have first dibs on the young shining star in question.

P-rayer:

Dear Jesus, Through the years, you’ve been so kind to me. More than once or twice, you brought a young person or a young couple to meet our needs. Thank You, Jesus! Amen.

The Anointing That Really Matters

S. O. A. P.

Here’s Your 90 second AM Devotional!

S-cripture:

2 Samuel 2:4 Then the men of Judah came to Hebron, and there they anointed David king over the tribe of Judah.

O-bservation:

In this passage, we are told of David’s second anointing. This second anointing by the men of Judah at Hebron made him king over Judah. Then, in 2 Samuel 5, we are told that all the men of Israel came and anointed David king over Israel after his seven-year reign at Hebron as the King of Judah. He ruled all of Israel for 33 years. However, David’s first anointing took place in 1 Samuel 16 in his father, Jesse’s, house in Bethlehem. It was there that the God of all the ages had His prophet Samuel anoint David as the future king.

A-pplication:

I want to impress upon you this AM about “The Anointing That Really Matters.” Think of David living in a cave known as Adullam. Think of him running for his life from King Saul. Think of him gathering men who were in debt, in distress, and discouraged who would join him and become a well-trained group of warriors under his leadership. Then think of him being anointed at Hebron by the men of Judah to be their king for more than seven years. Then think of the day all the tribes of Israel anointed David as the king over all of Israel. I believe that “The Anointing That Really Matters” is the anointing of the most high God. Once David knew as a teenager that he had the anointing of God, he was willing to go anywhere, do anything, and fight any enemy. He was grateful for man's anointing, but what he knew in his heart was “The Anointing That Really Matters” is the one that comes from above.

P-rayer:

Dear Jesus, Your anointing is all I ask for. That’s the only anointing that really matters. Amen

The Anointing Was On Him

S. O. A. P.

Here’s Your 90 second AM Devotional!

S-cripture:

1 Chronicles 12:18
Then the Spirit came on Amasai, chief of the Thirty, and he said: “We are yours, David! We are with you, son of Jesse! Success, success to you, and success to those who help you, for your God will help you.” So David received them and made them leaders of his raiding bands.

O-bservation:

A group of soldiers from the tribe of Benjamin came to offer their lives and service to King David. They were powerful men. Their chief was Amasai, who was over thirty mighty men. David had said to them if they were coming in peace, he would receive them. But if they had ulterior motives, God would be his defender. Suddenly, the Spirit came upon Amasai, and he said, “No we have come to see you blessed with success.”  Another translation says peace. David accepted them and made them some of his chosen leaders.

A-pplication:

The kind of warriors that David had coming to his stronghold at that time was astounding. Men from every tribe were coming, and many of them were some of the greatest warriors ever written of. How did this happen? I believe two factors made it happen. First, these men were skilled and battle-tested warriors, and there was no longer leadership with Saul dead. They saw in David a hope for their life’s calling and skills. Second, I believe these men could tell that “The Anointing Was On Him.” When a man or woman is covered with the anointing of the Lord, great things can happen because they have been selected by God to win. As a young man, I would hear my father say to me over and over, “Rich, ask the Lord for His anointing on your life.” And I did. I can tell you that the anointing of the Lord makes all the difference.

P-rayer:

Dear Jesus, I don’t want to move today without Your precious anointing on my life. In my life, your anointing has made all the difference for my family. Thank You for Your anointing! Amen

The Holy Anointing Oil

S. O. A. P.

Here’s Your 90 second AM Devotional!

S-cripture:

Exodus 30:25
Make these into a sacred anointing oil, a fragrant blend, the work of a perfumer. It will be the sacred anointing oil.

O-bservation:

In the previous two verses, the Lord spoke to Moses about “The Holy Anointing Oil” He wanted the priests to commission from the known apothecaries, or perfumers. The ingredients included the following fine spices: liquid myrrh, fragrant cinnamon, fragrant calamus, cassia, and olive oil. The measure of each was included in the holy recipe given by the Lord. A perfumer was to be used so that the aroma had an unmistakable scent that would resonate with the people. It was “God’s Fragrance.”

A-pplication:

“The Holy Anointing Oil” prescribed by the Lord was to be used in the temple so that when people walked into the room, it smelled of God’s presence. Second, it was used to anoint people physically. It was a symbol of the Holy Spirit. You couldn’t see Him, but indeed He was there. It was not thick like most other potions but could be poured on the individual who wanted more of God in their lives. Today, “The Holy Anointing Oil” rarely has a certain recipe of designated oils. In fact, I’ve known cooking oils to be used to anoint someone who is sick (James 5:16) to symbolize the presence of the Holy Spirit in that moment. In which case, the person in need instantly has a sense that “God is here, and God will meet my every need.” Never reject the opportunity when someone offers to anoint you with “The Holy Anointing Oil.”

P-rayer:

Dear Jesus, I’m always ready to be blessed with “The Holy Anointing Oil.” Sometimes all the individual has is Wesson cooking oil, but what it symbolizes to me is You are with me. Amen

Let God’s Anointing Be Your Instructor

S. O. A. P.

Here’s Your 90 second AM Devotional!

S-cripture:

1 John 2:27
As for you, the anointing you received from him remains in you, and you do not need anyone to teach you. But as his anointing teaches you about all things and as that anointing is real, not counterfeit—just as it has taught you, remain in him.

O-bservation:

These are the words of John, who earlier, in verse 20, said to these same readers that they had received an anointing from the Holy One. He was speaking of the Holy Spirit. This unction from the Holy Spirit upon those believers, and on you and me, is significant if we take it that way. This anointing from the Holy Spirit acts as a teacher at all times, keeping us from sin.

A-pplication:

In the context John was writing from, many false teachers were doing their best to rip Christians away from the truth. When John said you have the Holy Spirit, you need no other teachers, he was saying, “You have had great teachers sent by God to lead you into the truth. You accepted Jesus and then became anointed by the Holy Spirit. So, you don’t need any other teachers.” Meaning you don’t need false teachers trying to lead you astray! Lean on the anointing of the Holy Spirit instead, because the Holy Spirit will lead you into all truth. This is the birthday of our Lord. Jesus’ ministry on earth has impacted the entire world forever. But when He left, He told us He was sending us a Comforter. The Holy Spirit. Jesus said, “He will lead you into all truth.” And it’s true. Trust the Holy Spirit on this Christmas Day and every day. “Let God’s Anointing Be Your Instructor.”

P-rayer:

Dear Jesus, I know it sounds so elementary to You, but because I’m an earthling, Happy Birthday Jesus. Thank You for coming to this world to save us. And, thank You for sending us the precious Holy Spirit. Amen
