Suck It Up
S. O. A. P.
Here’s Your 90 second AM Devotional!
S-cripture:
Luke 10:8
“When you enter a town and are welcomed, eat what is offered to you.”
O-bservation:
Jesus spoke to His disciples before sending them out concerning a matter of common courtesy. He said to them, “When you go into a place that isn’t like where you come from, and when the people offer you something to eat, eat it.
A-pplication:
Many years ago, at the age of seventeen, I had just graduated from high school, and several days later I was getting on an airplane with six other young people to work in Cape Palmas, Liberia, West Africa for the summer. I was there for two months, and it changed my life. Just before I left, my father, who had been all over Africa in his life, said, “Rich, you’re going to be in some villages, and the people will offer you strange food that you’re not accustomed to eating. Just, Suck It Up son and eat it. If the people are nice enough to offer you their best, eat what is set before you!” I can tell you that I had some pretty different meals that summer. Fast forward probably twenty years, and I took my two older sons with Robyn and me to Singapore. Before we left, I told them what my father had told me. And the boys did what I told them to do. They ate it! Later, some of the Singapore pastors visited us in the US, and guess what, they “Sucked It Up” and ate our food too. Christianity is not about complaining. Christianity is being THANKFUL for the kindness of others even when you have to sometimes, “Suck It Up!”
P-rayer:
Dear Jesus,
This AM, I’m thankful that down through the years, I’ve actually lived another day because of someone who cared to offer me what they had. Help me to always be grateful. No matter what, I want to be grateful! Amen
