Please Don’t Jump Ship!

S. O. A. P.

Here’s Your 90 second AM Devotional!

Acts 13:13

From Paphos, Paul and his companions sailed to Perga in Pamphylia, where John left them to return to Jerusalem.

On this, the first of Paul’s missionary journeys, Barnabas’ relative John Mark left the mission for some reason and headed home to Jerusalem.

The mission was completed and Paul and Barnabas prepared to set out for their second journey. But it was quickly derailed when Barnabas insisted on taking John Mark with them again. Paul said no, and they divided over it. Paul was upset that young John Mark had “jumped ship” on the first journey. Barnabas took the boy and Paul took Silas. Years later, Barnabas handed John Mark off to St. Peter as his assistant. Obviously John Mark became a fantastic leader, writing the words of Peter as the second Gospel, and years later having St. Paul ask him to come because he had found John Mark  helpful to him in the ministry (2 Tim. 4:11)! The question remains, what might have happened had John Mark not “jumped ship” early on? Whatever your mission is today, stay on board until it’s complete. “Please Don’t Jump Ship!”

Dear Jesus,

I’m in rough waters right now, but through the years You’ve helped me to stay on board until the mission is complete. Help me again today I pray! Amen
