Like Father Like Son

Here’s Your 90 second AM Devotional!

Matthew 1: 19

Because Joseph her husband was faithful to the law, and yet did not want to expose her to public disgrace, he had in mind to divorce her quietly.

Joseph, Jesus’ eventual stepfather, was engaged to be married to Mary. But then he heard she was pregnant, not by man but by God Himself. He was a gentle and kind person, and he wanted to keep the Jewish law, but neither did he want to hurt Mary publicly. He decided that he would abide by the law and also separate himself from the sin she must certainly have committed. He decided to do it quietly, so as not to bring complete shame upon this young woman he had loved.

Here’s what the disciple known as John the Beloved had to say about Jesus. “For the law was given through Moses; grace and truth came through Jesus Christ” (Jn. 1:17). Moses gave us the law, but Jesus came with Grace and Truth. You could say that the “Truth” part that Jesus brought was His adherence to the historical Old Testament commands. Everything Jesus did was to uphold what was true from what His Father had commanded, but with grace as His mantle, a love now bathed the truth of God. When Joseph prepared to disassociate himself from Mary in a private way so as not to bring public shame to her, he was operating the way that His stepson Jesus would live out and teach as the way God would have us to now live in the future. Thank God, the angel of the Lord spared Joseph from divorcing Mary, but also thank God that Jesus’ earthly father lived the way his son Jesus would teach us all to live. “Like Father Like Son.”

Dear Jesus,

Thank You for picking the perfect earthly father for Your one and only Son, Jesus. It seems like You picked a man who already knew about Grace and Truth! Amen
