Her Name Was Sinner

Here’s Your 90 second AM Devotional!

Luke 7:38

As she stood behind him at his feet weeping, she began to wet his feet with her tears. Then she wiped them with her hair, kissed them and poured perfume on them.

Other gospels give this or a similar woman a name. Most of us believe it is Mary; however, there is no conclusive evidence that it is. The only name she’s given in this story is found in verse 39 when the Pharisee who had invited Jesus to his home was so incensed that she would do this to his guest that he called her “A Sinner.” So all we really have to go on is “Her Name Was Sinner.”

Whenever I go to a grocery store, I’m always so happy that there are labels on the cans and packaging. Without a label at a grocery store, you have no way of knowing what you’re getting. However, when we begin labeling fellow human beings, it becomes a terrible practice. It’s obvious the community where this woman was from had decided to label her without a proper name. Instead, to them, “Her Name Was Sinner.” They had labeled her. That’s all they needed to know. They hadn’t seen the great need for forgiveness in this woman, and they hadn’t taken the time to realize the potential in this woman. Instead, just a label as if to say …”Next.” For Jesus, there was never a “Next.” Instead, He lived in the moment, meeting the people one by one and serving them. I’m finished with labels. I want to help people.

Dear Jesus,

When I meet people today, help me remember they each have a name. And they each have a divine destiny. And You love them. Help me to love them too. Amen
