Have You Had A Mouthwash Lately?

Here’s Your 90 second AM Devotional!

Ephesians 4:29

Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen.

These are the words of the Apostle Paul to the young church at Ephesus. He was encouraging them to keep unwholesome talk from coming out of the mouths of any who were Jesus people. He wanted them, and all believers today, to measure their words appropriately to those who are listening so that what is said builds others up.

When reading this passage, my first thought is always, “Have You Had A Mouthwash Lately?” When I was a boy and said something disrespectful, my mother would always take me in the restroom and wash my mouth out with soap. She would start by saying, “Well, I can certainly tell you haven’t had a mouthwash lately.” What she was saying was she wasn’t going to tolerate unwholesome talk coming out of her little boy’s mouth. The way some believers talk to others, and the way some of them use foul language makes you wonder what team they’re playing for. The problem is, this isn’t a game. It’s life. The life we are living is in preparation for the next life to come. It has to do with the destination we’re most comfortable with. If I’m not planning on going to hell, then with God’s help, I won’t let the language of hell come out of my mouth. That’s why I’m asking this AM, “Have You Had A Mouthwash Lately?”

Dear Jesus,

I’m asking for continual cleansing of my heart because I know that it’s from the abundance of my heart that my mouth will speak. Amen
