2 Kings 22:1a
Josiah was eight years old when he became king, and he reigned in Jerusalem thirty-one years.
Josiah succeeded his father, Amon, who was only twenty-four when he was assassinated by people within his own kingdom. Amon was the son of Manasseh, who was the vilest and wickedest king in Judah’s history. Most likely, the people were so utterly despising of anything connected to Manasseh that when they saw his son Amon carry on with his father’s wicked ways, they killed the young man instead, allowing “A Little Child To Lead Them.”
Josiah’s grandfather, Manasseh, began to reign at the age of twelve and was the most wicked king in Judah’s history, as was noted. Then Josiah took over the wicked kingdom at the age of eight and turned it toward God again. In either case, God chose “A Little Child To Lead Them.” Why? I really wish I could answer that. In Manasseh’s case, he was the child born after Hezekiah’s sickness, and his mother is purported to be the daughter of Isaiah, the prophet. Maybe they were both tired of righteousness prevailing, and so they, mother and child, rebelled. Josiah and his mom, on the other hand, could have been weary of wretchedness being the underbelly of Judah. For whatever reason, mother and son chose the ways of God. I’m not sure we need a CHILD to lead us, but we sure could use “A CHILD OF GOD To Lead Us!”
All we ever hear about is LEADERSHIP, yet LEADERSHIP appears to have disappeared in our culture right now. Help us to return to You, oh Lord, no matter what the cost may be. Amen
