Godly Jealousy

Here’s Your 90 second AM Devotional!

2 Corinthians 11:2  I am jealous for you with a godly jealousy. I promised you to one husband, to Christ, so that I might present you as a pure virgin to him.

St. Paul lets the church at Corinth know that he is concerned with a new breed of super apostles who were showing up with a strange doctrine. He felt as though the people were being deceived, and he said to them in his letter that he was jealous for them with a “Godly Jealousy.”

St. Paul and others had laid down their lives for the young church at Corinth. He said he had robbed (in a way of speaking) other churches so he could preach to the Corinthian church free of charge. He also said he had done everything possible to present this church to Jesus as a pure virgin to the Lord. Now he was troubled that other “Fake Preachers” were showing up with a weird doctrine that muddied the spiritual waters of purity, in a theological sense. Like a loving father who sees a son or daughter going the wrong way, Paul was forthright in saying, “I am jealous for you!” Would to God that preachers today, both men and women, would have the same passion for their sheep when they face the threat of bad theology. It’s time that spiritual leadership once again loves their flock with a “Godly Jealousy.”

Dear Jesus, I’m so grateful tonight that You, most of all, are jealous for me. You, throughout my life, have sent just the right leader to steer me back onto the path that is most pleasing to You. Amen
