Let Jesus Deliver You”

2 Peter 2:19b

For “people are slaves to whatever has mastered them.”

This entire chapter has to do with St. Peter endeavoring to help “Jesus Followers” avoid false teachers. Many of the people in his day were being deceived by false teachers. Peter said they were like “a sow who had been washed clean returning to the mud” (v.22). Consequently, Peter says in this passage that “people become slaves to whatever they’ve allowed to master them.”

The process of moving away from our old sinful life towards a life that is pleasing to Jesus is called “Sanctification.” Ideologies and activities that formerly held us in bondage had literally mastered us. In fact, we were slaves to these very thoughts and activities. Yet, because of the grace of our Lord Jesus, we have been delivered from such forced activity. If, however, lately you’ve found yourself drifting back to your old life of bondage, don’t wait another minute. “Let Jesus Deliver You!”

Dear Jesus,

Whenever I think of the picture of the sow returning to the mud after a fresh bath, I’m convinced. I’ll stay with You. You’ve already delivered me from the mud of sin. Amen
