Enough About You, What About Me?

S. O. A. P.

Here’s Your 90 second AM Devotional!

S-cripture:

Matthew 20:20

Then the mother of Zebedee’s sons came to Jesus with her sons and, kneeling down, asked a favor of him.

O-bservation:

This event immediately followed Jesus telling His disciples that He was going to Jerusalem, where He would be crucified and would arise from the dead on the third day. After hearing this, Mrs. Zebedee brought her sons, James and John, to Jesus to ask Him a favor. James and John were two of Jesus’ disciples. The favor she was asking for was that her sons could sit on either side of Jesus in glory.

A-pplication:

For this favor to be asked of Jesus by the mother of two of his key disciples, James and John, right after He bared His soul to His key men, was something like them saying, “Enough About You, What About Me?” It’s hard to believe that people could be so cold at a time like that. Yet isn’t that the nature of humankind. The question to every new piece of information we receive is usually, “How will this affect me?” But, of course, since Jesus had not yet been crucified, how could any of them at that point have known how to take up their own cross and follow Jesus? It’s only in Jesus’ model that you and I even have a chance to walk away from the general population and say, “Nevertheless, not my will but Thine be done.”

P-rayer:

Dear Jesus,

I know that I’m kind of an “Enough About You, What About Me” kind of person in myself. But because of Your sacrifice, I can now lay my own will aside for Yours and Yours alone! Amen
