“But you, Bethlehem, in the land of Judah, are by no means least among the rulers of Judah; for out of you will come a ruler who will shepherd my people Israel.”
When Jesus was born, the Magi came to worship Him and bring gifts. Since they weren’t sure where to find him, they stopped and asked King Herod. Herod, though troubled, asked the chief priests where the Messiah was to be born, and they answered the king this passage, foretold by the prophet Micah in Micah 5:2.
I have always referred to this passage as “The Bethlehem Blessing.” The reason is that if you’ve ever been to Bethlehem, you know what an unlikely place this is for the King of Kings to have been born. Today, there are only about 30,000 people who live in a jam-packed little, poor place. Seriously, it takes forever to go five miles. It’s only 6 miles from Jerusalem, but with the checkpoints, it could take almost an hour to get there if it’s rush hour. What’s so amazing about this place is that the King of the Universe was born there. I’m sure there have been times in your life when you all but disposed of something or someplace because you thought not much, if anything, could come of it. But, from this little nowhere place came Jesus. “The Bethlehem Blessing” simply says that small things can become multiplied and magnified when God is in it. Never despise the day of small beginnings, the scripture says, because it’s when you least expect something that God makes a mighty miracle. Get ready for your “Bethlehem Blessing” today.
Thank You that with You there are NO small places! Amen
