Here’s Your 90 second AM Devotional!
1 Samuel 6:20a
And the people of Beth Shemesh asked, “Who can stand in the presence of the Lord, this holy God?”
After Eli’s death, the Philistines had captured the ark of God and placed it in Dagon’s temple, right next to Dagon. The next day the people saw Dagon’s statue fallen and smashed on the ground. That began turmoil in the land of the Philistines until they could get the ark back to Israel with “guilt offerings” as a payback. When it arrived in Beth Shemesh, Israeli territory, the people rejoiced, but seventy were killed by God for looking into the ark! They were shocked and cried out, “Who can stand before a holy God?”
First of all, the people of God were punished because in their excitement they forgot that this was a victory, but the ark was still the house of God and not to be taken lightly. They inadvertently looked in and died on the spot. Our holy God is not to be blamed for such a thing; instead, the people who take Him lightly are the true culprits. It behooves us never to blame our great God for anything! He is God alone! But, should you in your frustration today ask the question, “Who can stand in the presence of the Lord, this holy God?” Remember this short answer, “Only With HIS Help” can you or I ever stand in His presence.
I am unworthy to ever stand in Your presence, my most holy Lord. However, I do lean on Your help today as I boldly approach Your throne room of grace. Amen
