Keep Your Hands And Opinions To Yourself

S. O. A. P. Here’s Your 90 second AM Devotional! S-cripture: Psalm 105:15 Do not touch my anointed ones; do my prophets no harm. O-bservation: It has always been the will of God that He Himself rule and discipline His chosen spiritual leaders. Throughout Scripture, the Lord tells His followers, “When it comes to judging spiritual leadership among you … Keep Your Hands And Opinions To Yourself.” A-pplication: King David, who makes the statement in this scripture, was himself subject to spiritual leadership. Even though he was the King of Israel, he was yielded to Nathan, the Prophet of his day. If we as “Jesus Followers” take the discipline of our spiritual leaders into our own hands, the leaders themselves will be inhibited from telling us the full counsel of the Lord. It’s better to have a clear word from the Lord than it is to be able to tell the Prophet what he or she can and cannot say. In this case, it’s better to “Keep Your Hands And Opinions To Yourself.” P-rayer: Dear Jesus, This AM, I am reminded that I need my spiritual leaders more attuned to what You are telling them to say than being afraid

A Lethal Altar Call

S. O. A. P. Here’s Your 90 second AM Devotional! S-cripture: Jeremiah 26:8 But as soon as Jeremiah finished telling all the people everything the Lord had commanded him to say, the priests, the prophets and all the people seized him and said, “You must die! O-bservation: Jeremiah told the leaders and people of his day everything the Lord had commanded him to say. As soon as he finished and it was time for the altar call, they said, “Let’s kill him!” A-pplication: What do you do when you have absolutely done exactly what God has told you to do and you are wholeheartedly rejected? This passage of scripture is an example of what I call a “A Lethal Altar Call.” In other words, not everything the Lord asks us to do will work out the way we think it should. But just because your work efforts for the Lord and immediate outcomes seem to be a complete disaster doesn’t mean you’re out of the will of God. When we read this piece of history from Scripture, we would all agree that Jeremiah was in the will of God. But conventional wisdom at the time said, “You’re an idiot!” By

Don’t Forget Where It Comes From

S. O. A. P. Here’s Your 90 second AM Devotional! S-cripture: John 19:11a Jesus answered, “You would have no power over me if it were not given to you from above.” O-bservation: Pilate had just threatened Jesus with his demonstrative way of trying to show Jesus that he could have Him killed. Jesus let him know any power he had came from HIS Father in heaven. A-pplication: In my life, I’ve had the privilege of traveling over 3 million air miles! The Lord has blessed me by allowing me to meet so many wonderful and not so wonderful folks. I say “not so wonderful” because it’s usually those people who really believe they are SELF MADE. However, every “Self Made” man or woman is living by the authority of an all powerful, all knowing, and all everywhere God who allows them the air they breathe each day. The enemy of our souls loves to tempt us with ridiculous thoughts such as, “I did this!” The truth is King David had it right when he said to the Lord above, “Who is man that You even consider us?” (my paraphrase). Truly any blessing, victory, accomplishment, or accumulation of wealth any of

SOAP STANDS FOR:

S – Scripture
O – Observation
A – Application
P – Prayer

When you study God’s Word using the SOAP method, you are choosing one verse out of that day’s reading and focusing on it in several ways. The SOAP method is a 4-step Bible study process that allows you to dive deep into God’s word and actively apply it to your life. Here are the four steps you will take.

S – Scripture

Write down the Bible passage you’ll be studying and spend time really thinking about the verse itself and what is happening in that verse.

O – Observation

Really look at the text and write down your observations. You might write about:

  • What jumps out to you in the passage?
  • Who is it written by? Who is it written to?
  • What’s one thing you didn’t notice before?
  • What seems interesting or unusual?
  • What comes before and after the text?

A – Application

In the applications step, you will apply God’s Word to your life in a practical way. This is where you personalize your study of Scripture. As you read over the text, how does it apply to you? Is there a specific action you need to take or a confession you need to make?

P – Prayer

Finally, take time to write out a prayer in response to God’s Word. Thank God for the insights He’s given you and ask Him for His continued influence in your life.
