Here’s Your 90 second AM Devotional!
There will always be poor people in the land. Therefore I command you to be openhanded toward your fellow Israelites who are poor and needy in your land.
Moses continued to give the Lord’s directives in this chapter, and this verse in particular stands out. He told the people that there would ALWAYS be POOR PEOPLE in the land. He commanded the people to be openhanded, or generous, toward the POOR no matter what.
I know there will be those who argue that this verse was intended solely for the people of Israel. However, when Jesus came He told us that He did not come to do away with the law, but to fulfill the law. That means those of us who are “Followers Of Jesus” and do not live in Israel are just as bound to these words as were the folks Moses was speaking to thousands of years ago. There’s never going to be a utopia here in earth where the poor do not exist. Oh, you may have had the good fortune of living in a neighborhood where there are few if any who struggle financially, but I’m sure that within a few miles you will find those broken by limited financial income. We are not free to turn away from them, but are commanded to be open handed and generous. “What Can We Do For The Poor?” I guess the best answer is … DO SOMETHING! DON’T DO NOTHING!
With Your help, I promise to keep my hand open and my pockets moving in the direction of those in need. Amen
