Here’s Your 90 second AM Devotional!
Then what was spoken by Jeremiah the prophet was fulfilled: “They took the thirty pieces of silver, the price set on him by the people of Israel, and they used them to buy the potter’s field, as the Lord commanded me.”
Matthew, as he writes the story of the crucifixion, begins by talking about Judas and how he had remorse for betraying the Lord. He took the thirty pieces of silver back to the chief priests and the elders and apologized. They would have nothing to do with his apology. So he threw the money into the temple and went out and hung himself. The leaders took the money and bought the Potters Field and buried him there. The writer then says that Jeremiah had prophesied this.
Rarely do I use two verses in our SOAP Devos, but this story must have the two verses to make sense. Even then there appears to be a discrepancy. This prophecy is not found in Jeremiah, it is found in Zechariah 11:12-13. Many theologians attribute the words of Zechariah to Jeremiah, his mentor, since Jeremiah was the prophet Zechariah came up under. Either way, every Jewish Rabbi and certainly the chief priests would have known this prophecy. Why then, would they knowingly play right into God’s prophesied plan and then deny it was God who was overseeing this whole story? Probably for the same reason people today reject all of the truth staring them in the face. They were just, “Too PROUD To Change!”
I humble myself before You again this AM. I am Your servant. Amen
