Too Little Too Late
S. O. A. P.
Here’s Your 90 second AM Devotional!
S-cripture:
Daniel 5:29
Then at Belshazzar’s command, Daniel was clothed in purple, a gold chain was placed around his neck, and he was proclaimed the third highest ruler in the kingdom.
O-bservation:
This happened after Daniel was brought into the ballroom to decipher the foreign words written on the wall by the hand of God. Basically, Daniel told the King that his orgy was over and that he would be destroyed. Immediately the king put a gold chain on Daniel’s neck and made him the third highest-ranking official in the land.
A-pplication:
That very night Belshazzar was slain, and his kingdom ended. For Belshazzar, it was “Too Little Too Late.” When you know the history of this event, it makes sense. Whether Belshazzar was the son or grandson of Nebuchadnezzar is not clear, but certainly he knew the history of his famous forefather and how Daniel had been an integral part of it. If Belshazzar was serious about his position, upon receiving his crown he should have elevated Daniel to the second position of authority in the land (i.e., Joseph) and should have served Daniel’s God. However, like so many other despots, he made it about himself. When all people have to turn to is you, in time they will turn on you. If, however, we will point people to Jesus, like Daniel, we’ll still be standing when the new leader shows up.
P-rayer:
Dear Jesus,
This AM, I’m reminded that You and You alone are the single most important figure in the heavens above and the earth here below. I will spend my life pointing people to YOU, my King. Amen
