2 Samuel 3:30
Joab and his brother Abishai murdered Abner because he had killed their brother Asahel in the battle at Gibeon.
This is a sad story. Sometime earlier, Abner, who was still connected to the lineage of Saul, challenged Joab to a fight. His men (Abner’s) against Joab’s men. Joab accepted and during the fight Asahel, who was a fast runner, took after Abner and as he was getting closer Abner said, “Asahel turn left or right but don’t come after me.” Asahel would not listen, and Abner was forced to kill Asahel or be killed. It was regrettable but fair. In time, Abner came over to David’s side. Joab and Abishai years later murdered Abner, one of David’s chosen leaders. The scripture says they murdered Abner “BECAUSE” he had killed their brother.
“There’s Always A BECAUSE!” Joab was intent on getting even for his brother’s death, so he took it out of the Lord’s hands. Always remember that revenge is God’s business, not our business. Scripture says, “Do not take revenge, my dear friends, but leave room for God’s wrath, for it is written: ‘It is mine to avenge; I will repay,’ says the Lord” (Rom. 12:19). But the man or woman who can’t drop the “BECAUSE” from the equation will break God’s word every time. Abner was an honorable man and a close friend of David. But Asahel, the younger brother of Joab and Abishai (heroes in David’s army) was probably wanting to make a name for himself by taking out one of the late Saul’s generals. Privates should stay away from competition with generals, and because he refused to stand down, Abner was forced to kill the young man. He killed him in self-defense. He did not murder the young man. But “BECAUSE” Joab and Abishai couldn’t let it go, years later on David’s death bed he told his son Solomon to destroy Joab for his sins against Abner (1 Kings 2:5-6). Whatever you do, let God have the revenge. Because … “There’s Always A BECAUSE.”
Help me to let it go today. Just help me to let it go. You alone are worthy of handling any ills I’ve faced at the hands of another. I trust You to handle it in Your way and time. Amen
