Our Only Boast

S. O. A. P.

Here’s Your 90 second AM Devotional!

1 Corinthians 1:31

Therefore, as it is written: “Let the one who boasts boast in the Lord.”

In this passage, the Apostle Paul referenced a directive from the Old Testament prophet Jeremiah. Actually, Jeremiah was giving a command from God Himself. “If you’re going to boast, boast only about Me.”

How quickly I’ve been challenged by the enemy of my soul to forget this command of our Lord. I’m not sure if you’re like me, but I catch myself saying things like, “I did this” or “I was able to talk him into this.” Those sentences that start with the word “I” usually are coming, sometimes unknowingly, from a prideful or boastful place. Jesus’ brother James says it even more clearly, “Now listen, you who say, ‘Today or tomorrow we will go to this or to that city, spend a year there, carry on business and make money.’ Why, you do not even know what will happen tomorrow. What is your life? You are a mist that appears for a little while and then vanishes. Instead, you ought to say, ‘If it is the Lord’s will, we will live and do this or that’” (James 4:13-15). Lately, in my Sunday messages I’ll catch myself saying “I boast only in the cross of Christ” (Gal. 6:14). That usually follows one of my “I did something great” sentences. It’s always going to be a challenge for the “Follower Of Jesus” not to put themselves first. However, that’s our opportunity to boast in our Savior and His sacrifice on the Cross. That must be “Our Only Boast!”

Dear Jesus,

There is NO ONE like YOU! I will boast only in Your name. Amen
