Listen MORE, Talk LESS

S. O. A. P.

Here’s Your 90 second AM Devotional!

S-cripture:

Luke 9:35

A voice came from the cloud, saying, “This is my Son, whom I have chosen; listen to him.”

O-bservation:

While on a mountaintop with Jesus, James, and John, Peter and the others saw two men from the past, Moses and Elijah, appear and begin to speak with Jesus. Peter immediately spoke out loud and gave his opinion of what should happen next. It made no sense, and then the voice of God Almighty spoke from a cloud and said, “Listen to my Son, Jesus, whom I have chosen.”

A-pplication:

I’m not sure if there’s another story in the New Testament as mystical and surreal as this must have felt to the three disciples in this story. Probably the best thing Peter could have done is what the other two did. He should have kept his mouth shut! What’s so amazing is that God didn’t rebuke Peter for the ridiculous idea he had in the moment; instead, from a cloud the booming voice of the Lord was heard to say, “This is my Son whom I have chosen! Listen to what He has to say.” This was the closest the Lord came to rebuking Peter. But the message to all of us is loud and clear. “Talk LESS, Listen MORE.” Some 400 years before Jesus was born, Plato, the great Greek philosopher and father of modern day western thought, would instruct his students for 8 to 10 hours at a time. They had to be able to memorize as he spoke, so that they could report word for word what he had said. There wasn’t time for opinions, because the wise philosopher was expounding. We could use more wisdom in this modern day. It begins by LISTENING.

P-rayer:

Dear Jesus,

Today I will shut my mouth until called upon to speak. With Your help, I want to “Listen MORE, Talk LESS!” Amen
