I Guess I’m The Lily

S. O. A. P.

Here’s Your 90 second AM Devotional!

Song Of Songs 2:2

Like a lily among thorns is my darling among the young women.

Most theologians describe this entire book as a relationship between Solomon and one of his many wives or concubines. Some even believe it to be the Queen of Sheba. Matthew Henry, the evangelical fundamentalist, sees the entirety of the book as a metaphor between Christ and His wife, the Church. Here the writer says that Jesus sees us, His followers, as a lily among thorns. That no matter our flaws, we the Church by far outweigh all the other suitors.

My intention in writing this short devo is not to write the perfect interpretation of what was meant by the writer. But why not play it safe since the whole Bible is about Jesus and agree with Mr. Henry. Here’s why I’m a follower of Jesus. Wait … here’s one of the MANY reasons why I’m a follower of Jesus. He really does look at us like a lily among the thorns. Think of the many, many times you and I have failed Him. Think of the times, like Peter, when in a crunch we denied Him. Think of the times when He could have left us in our mire and utter filth, but instead, He picked us up, washed us through and through, and forgave us again and again. That’s the Jesus I know and serve. In His eyes, when He looks at me, He sees a part of His Church. And since I am, “I guess I’m The Lily.”

Dear Jesus,

I’m so thankful this AM that I am part of Your church. I’m grateful that You have chosen us as if we’re the only lily on the planet. Amen
