How Can I?

Here’s Your 90 second AM Devotional!

S-cripture:

Luke 1:18

Zechariah asked the angel, “How can I be sure of this? I am an old man and my wife is well along in years.”

O-bservation:

This is the story of the angel of the Lord telling Zechariah that he and his wife Elizabeth were going to conceive and have a son named John the Baptist. The angel of the Lord said this was happening because the Lord was answering Zechariah’s prayers. Of course Zechariah and Elizabeth were quite old, and Elizabeth could not conceive. When the angel spoke to Zechariah with the news, the old man said, “How Can I?”

A-pplication:

When Zechariah asked, “How Can I,” the Lord shut his mouth until the baby was born. This was a judgement of the Lord upon His servant Zechariah. Why? Well, what was the Lord supposed to do? Here Zechariah, even in his old age, had continued to pray for a child. God sent an angel to dispense the news to Zechariah. Seriously, who gets a personal angel to talk to? Even after this miraculous event, Zechariah still DOES NOT BELIEVE! In the meantime, in order to get the old man’s attention and renew his faith, God took his ability to speak away. I’m sure during this time of personal silence the old man realized that God was dealing with him. After the baby was born, the people asked Zechariah what the baby’s name would be. He wrote on a tablet, “His name will be John.” Immediately Zechariah’s speech returned. We have no record of Zechariah ever responding to the Lord again with the question, “How Can I?” Next time the Lord speaks to you just say, “With Your help, I’m on it!”

P-rayer:

Dear Jesus,

I’m so anxious to hear You speak to me today. When You do, I promise to say, “With Your help I’m on it.” Amen
