He Must Increase, I Must Decrease

S. O. A. P.

Here’s Your 90 second AM Devotional!

S-cripture:

Matthew 3:14

But John tried to deter him, saying, “I need to be baptized by you, and do you come to me?”

O-bservation:

These are the words of John the Baptist when his cousin, Jesus of Nazareth, came to be baptized by him. John was the forerunner of Jesus, sent by God to proclaim the Lord’s soon coming. When Jesus arrived on the scene in the middle of John’s amazing revival crusades to be baptized, John was shocked. He asked the Lord if He was sure of this because John, in his humble way, said, “I need to be baptized by you.”

A-pplication:

Later on, it was John the Baptist who said of Jesus, “He Must Increase, I Must Decrease” (Jn. 3:30). But these initial words of John to Jesus really tell us who John was. He wasn’t trying to build a name for himself. He wasn’t trying to pull the attention away from the Savior of the world. NO! John was a humble man. You and I are modern-day John the Baptists. You say, “What, Rich?” That’s right. We have been put here to herald the Lord’s soon coming. We weren’t sent to make a name for ourselves or try in any way to steal the attention away from our King of kings! No! We were put here to simply point people to Jesus and then respond when they ask about where that leaves us, “He Must Increase, I Must Decrease!”

P-rayer:

Dear Jesus,

I’m happy this AM, Lord, for You to increase and me to decrease. The better You will help me make that happen, the happier I will be. Amen
