Here’s Your 90 second AM Devotional!
Aaron’s sons Nadab and Abihu took their censers, put fire in them and added incense; and they offered unauthorized fire before the Lord, contrary to his command.
Only two chapters earlier, Aaron and his sons had been ordained as priests. It was a new experience for them. Yet, in God’s eyes, not only were they capable of the task, but they were also fully able to accomplish the task of the priesthood. Still, they had only been priests for a short time. This passage states that they offered unauthorized fire before the Lord. When this happened, the fire of the Lord from heaven came and completely consumed the two men, and they died. At that moment, Moses looked at his brother Aaron and said, “That’s what the Lord meant when He said in the presence of my people, I will be proved holy and will be honored.” Scripture says Aaron remained silent.
Whenever I read this passage, I think of two things. First, I think as a father that I can’t believe what just happened! How could a loving God do such a thing to two young men who had just received their ordination to the priesthood? The second thing I think is always, “God Is Good All The Time.” In other words, before I let my human emotions run wild with what my limited understanding perceives to be unfair, I must stop and say, “God Is Good All The Time.” The young men had forgotten to abide by each detail of the Lord’s instruction fully, and they were disciplined in the harshest of fashion for it. Yet God was proved to be, in front of the nation, the Holy sovereign of Israel. Whatever you or I sometimes think to be unfair, as in, “How could God???” always remember we’re not talking about people; we are talking about the living God of all the ages. When we stop to remember this perspective, we quickly remember to think and say, “God Is Good All The Time.”
This AM, I am reminded of Your holiness. I am reminded that I am not You. Although I have your image and your character, it is all in a finite way. And so I am happy to say, “God Is Good All The Time!” Amen
