God Is A Witness

S. O. A. P.

Here’s Your 90 second AM Devotional!

Genesis 31:50

If you mistreat my daughters or if you take any wives besides my daughters, even though no one is with us, remember that God is a witness between you and me.

These are the words of Laban, the father-in-law of Jacob. Laban had towered over Jacob with a powerful rule that at times almost buried the younger man. In the end, Jacob’s wives and children and flocks had all come by way of a gift, though begrudgingly, from Laban. The older man was opposed to Jacob and his family leaving him, but he knew there was no way to keep them when Jacob decided to go. So he forced a covenant upon Jacob that Jacob agreed to, and he said, “God Is A Witness between you and me.”

It’s always true that “God Is A Witness.” Nothing ever escapes the all-seeing eyes of the Lord. It was Job who said when speaking of our great God, “For he views the ends of the earth and sees everything under the heavens” (Job 28:24). The wisest man who ever lived, Solomon, said, “The Eyes of the Lord are everywhere, keeping watch on the wicked and the good” (Prov. 15:3). Jacob didn’t need his father-in-law to remind him that God was keeping watch over him, because as Jacob stated earlier, he had been protected by God in the heat of the day and the bitter cold at night while caring for Laban’s flocks. God had covered Jacob safely for twenty years. Jacob made the covenant anyway to clear out of the grasp of an ungrateful father-in-law. But the question today is posed to you and me. Will we determine in our hearts together to follow the Lord always, knowing that “God Is A Witness?”

Dear Jesus,

I realize as never before that nothing escapes the eyes of the Lord. I am yielded to your careful watch over me and humbly ask this AM for Your guidance and help in my life. Amen
