FUN With DEADLY Consequences

Here’s Your 90 second AM Devotional!

S-cripture:

Numbers 25:9

But those who died in the plague numbered 24,000.

O-bservation:

This is the tragic story of men of Israel uniting in a sexual way following idol worship with women from Moab. God had Moses tell the judges of Israel to do away with these men and expose them to the nation. In the middle of this wild debauchery, a man brought a Midianite woman into Israel and took her into his tent in front of everyone. This was anathema in God’s eyes. One of the priest’s sons named Phinehas went into the tent and destroyed them both, and the plague was stopped. But not until 24,000 people died at the hand of the Almighty.

A-pplication:

I was raised in a time when it seemed to me that anything that was “FUN” I wasn’t allowed to do. Perhaps you can recall such a time. Unfortunately, during my teen years, several of my friends died while having “FUN.” One died playing with guns. One died in a car driving home from a party. One died playing basketball from a heart attack. Each was having “FUN” when their life ended. I’m sure there was grace from the Lord if their heart was right. But there is what I call “FUN With DEADLY Consequences.” That’s the kind of “FUN” these men of Israel were engaged in when they died. They willfully walked away from what they knew to be the will of God, and it killed them. Here’s what Jesus said, “Do not be afraid of those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. Rather, be afraid of the One who can destroy both soul and body in hell” (Mt. 10:28).

P-rayer:

Dear Jesus,

Every day of my life, I have this growing admiration, respect, and love, and yes, I guess FEAR of You! I want to keep hold of each one of those components as they relate to You, because they help me stay focused on my calling and who YOU are in my life.
