Bible Toting Unbelievers

S. O. A. P.

Here’s Your 90 second AM Devotional!

S-cripture:

John 5:47

But since you do not believe what he wrote, how are you going to believe what I say?

O-bservation:

Earlier in this chapter, Jesus had healed the lame man by the pool of Bethesda. When Jewish leaders found out that Jesus healed the man on the Sabbath, they were not happy for the healed man but instead they were infuriated that Jesus had broken the law by healing him on the Sabbath. Jesus said, “If you don’t believe what Moses wrote, you’ll never believe what I say.”

A-pplication:

The Jewish leaders spoken of in this passage were all about the law of Moses. Jesus said, “Even Moses wrote about me being the Messiah. The truth is you’re all about the law of Moses until something he wrote doesn’t set well with you, then you don’t believe it.” The earliest writing by Moses concerning Jesus is found in Genesis 3:15, but these leaders weren’t buying it. So they kept the part of the Word they liked and spit out the parts they didn’t. However, every word in God’s Word is true. So when someone throws one part out because they are convicted by it, they are in fact nullifying the whole Word. You might have heard the saying, “If Jesus isn’t Lord of all in your life, He isn’t Lord at all!” That is the same sentiment we could use concerning God’s Word. For these leaders, only part of the Word was God’s Word. They believed what they wanted and threw out the rest. That made them “Bible Toting Unbelievers.”

P-rayer:

Dear Jesus,

This AM I want to hold fast to every word in The Book. Help me to ingest every word of your Word. I don’t want to discard anything, especially the difficult parts. I want all of it! Amen
