Here’s Your 90 second AM Devotional!
Then he prayed, “Lord, God of my master Abraham, make me successful today, and show kindness to my master Abraham.
This is the prayer of Abraham’s senior servant leader, meaning that this man ran the affairs of this great man, Abraham. It is generally believed to be the same senior servant leader Abraham prayed to the Lord about in Genesis 15:2. The man’s name was Eliezer, and Abraham reminded the Lord that he still had no children, and if he were to die his inheritance would go to this man, Eliezer. This had happened a half a century earlier, and of course God did provide Abraham with a promised son, Isaac.
I believe this is important background information because here, these many years later, this same man Eliezer was still faithfully serving his master Abraham. Think about it. After serving Abraham for a number of years, he stood to inherit everything Abraham owned, had Abraham and Sarah not have been able to conceive at the ripe ages of 100 and 90!! Maybe to understand it better, we should insert ourselves into the place of Eliezer. Imagine the conversations that must have gone on between him and his wife when Isaac was born! Yet now, more than 50 years later, Eliezer was still faithfully serving his master, Abraham. This story begs the question, what does “A True Servant” look like? Well, if you ask me, you need to look no further than this story of a man whose chief goal in life was to serve the man of God. This true servant one day came back with the lovely Rebecca to carry on the lineage of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.
I’m Yours today! It’s not my desire to rule, but rather it is my desire to serve. Help me be “A True Servant.” Amen
